If you're planning to travel the Ha Giang Loop in 2026, there is an important update you should know before arriving. Yeah, it's a boring thing again. Please, read carefully.

Since June 2026, authorities in Ha Giang have started enforcing the requirement for foreign travelers to carry a Border Area Permit when visiting districts along the Ha Giang Loop. Basically, this means that if you are doing the Ha Giang Loop, you gotta get this, no matter where you go, no matter where you sleep. This is now required.

The permit costs approximately 250,000 VND (around 10 USD) and is required because much of the route passes through areas located near the Chinese border. Authorities may ask to see the permit at checkpoints throughout the province. Travelers who cannot present it may face fines, delays, or be required to return to Ha Giang City to obtain the document.

Who Needs the Permit?

The permit is required for foreign passport holders traveling through the northern districts of Ha Giang, including:

  • Quan Ba

  • Yen Minh

  • Dong Van

  • Meo Vac

These areas fall within Vietnam's regulated border zone. So guys, this is basically the HA GIANG LOOP. Tourists were no longer required for permits since Covid, but enforcement has come back since June 2026.

Where Can You Get the Permit?

There are two main options:

1. Apply at the Immigration Office in Ha Giang City

Travelers can obtain the permit directly from the Immigration Office in Ha Giang City before starting the loop. Bring your passport and valid visa.

2. Let Your Tour Operator Arrange It

Many tour operators and travel agencies can organize the permit on your behalf before the tour starts. This is often the easiest option, especially if you arrive in Ha Giang late in the evening or have limited time. We are now managing for our guests coming with Borderlands Tours.

What Happens If You Don't Have It?

Travelers without a permit may encounter problems during their trip.

Possible consequences include:

  • Police checkpoints requesting documentation

  • Delays while authorities verify your status

  • Administrative fines

  • Being asked to return to Ha Giang City to obtain the permit

Accommodation providers in some areas may also request permit information when registering foreign guests.

Our Recommendation

If you're planning to travel independently, arrange the permit before leaving Ha Giang City.

If you're joining an organized tour, ask your operator whether the permit is included. As it's a new thing and an increased cost, you have to know in advance whether they can afford to include it or not. Plus, not all companies handle the process automatically, as it's quite annoying.

Considering the increased enforcement seen since June 2026, carrying the permit is now one of the most important travel documents for anyone planning to explore the Ha Giang Loop.

We'll continue updating this guide as authorities release additional information.
